City Responds to Student-Led Movement

School walkouts
Local students march to City Hall on Wednesday, February 21
In the aftermath of the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in neighboring Parkland, City of Boca Raton officials mobilized Boca Raton Police to help provide extra security in Boca Raton schools. On Wednesday, February 21, one week after the shooting, City officials welcomed and heard over 1,000 local high school students who marched to City Hall to demand action from elected officials.

On February 27, 2018, the City Council unanimously passed Resolution No 39-2018, a resolution encouraging the United States Congress and Florida Legislature to enact measures to protect school children and our communities from gun violence, and to develop effective strategies to address, support and provide resources for persons suffering from mental health issues, which may include enacting reasonable firearms regulations, providing resources to address mental health issues and implementing enhanced security measures for public schools and other community institutions.

The City of Boca Raton will continue to work with the Palm Beach County School District to make schools safer and is working with the community, State and Federal lawmakers on this critical safety issue.
