[ARCHIVED] Flood Maps Are Changing. Do You Know Your Risk?

Did you know that flood risk changes over time? The City of Boca Raton is taking action along with government partners to develop more accurate flood maps to better inform residents about their flood risk. It’s important to understand what "higher" or "lower" risk means for each resident, and what can be done to protect homes and business from the consequences of a flood.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Palm Beach County held Flood Risk Open Houses in communities throughout Palm Beach and Broward Counties to help residents learn about the newly updated flood maps. Community officials and FEMA representatives were on hand to answer citizen’s questions about the maps, the mapping process and flood insurance.

During the meetings, residents were able to locate their property on the new flood map and talk to members of the project team, flood insurance professionals, and state and local officials about what the information might mean for their property.

Flooding is the number one most common and costly natural disaster in the United States. It is vital that property owners understand their risk and take advantage of the tools and programs available to them, including flood insurance.

If residents were unable to attend an open house and would like more information, please call or email Keith Carney, Senior Zoning Officer/Floodplain Manager at 561-393-7792 or [email protected]. Residents can also visit the City’s Floodplain Management webpage.
