[ARCHIVED] Get Your Walking Shoes and Step Trackers Ready; the Gumbo Limbo Boardwalk is Now Open

New boardwalk at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center

The entire Gumbo Limbo Boardwalk is now open for your enjoyment! Replacement reconstruction of the boardwalk was completed in three phases, with the first section opened in December of 2016. Phases two and three included complete replacement of the loop along the intracoastal waterway and replacement of the handrails on the southern extension. The project was funded by the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District.

Available from 7:00am until sunset every day, the elevated boardwalk offers visitors a chance to explore the maritime coastal hammock forest -- only one of three examples of this habitat remaining in Palm Beach County. The entire 1/2 mile loop is now open for you to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a shaded walk through the hammock and along the intracoastal waterway. Stop to get an up close look at several archeological middens that have been dated to be nearly 2,500 years old. These ancient shells are proof that Gumbo Limbo has been a popular destination for visitors for thousands of years. Native trees you may see on your walk include Gumbo Limbo, Strangler Fig, Mastic, Mangroves, and Paradise Tree. Make sure to pick up a guide to the trees of the hammock available at the nature center before you begin your walk.
