What's Going On With All This Seaweed?

Posted on August 19, 2019 at 10:29 AM by Anne Marie Connolly

If you'v been to the beach lately, you've probably seen the tremendous amount of seaweed on our shoreline. Florida is currently experiencing massive amounts of seaweed washing on shore. Due to this immense influx, the City of Boca Raton's Parks and Recreation staff is raking our beaches every day to clear it out. The process usually begins at 7am until patrons start to fill the beach which is normally around 10am. However, as soon as the beach is raked clean, new seaweed washes on shore.

In addition, the City is currently in the middle of sea turtle season which prohibits raking the beaches above the high tide line. Because of this, Boca Raton is required to wait for a daily sea turtle survey to be completed before tractors can enter the beach.

The City is dedicated to providing a great experience for all patrons visiting our beaches and will continue to work hard to do so.
