City of Boca Raton Municipal Championship Golf Course - Update on Changes to the 16th Hole
The City will be making some changes to the 16th Hole effective February 1, 2021. A portion of the hole will be roped off from play and a new green will be created. The 16th will remain a Par 4. Depending on the location of the tee boxes and flag, it will play between 235 and 250 yards from the blue tees. The course will remain a Par 72. The 16th will remain this short Par 4 until the course closes.
This change is necessary to accommodate soil mixing activities by G.L. Homes, which is scheduled to take ownership of the golf course property on October 31, 2021. The City's contract with G.L. for purchase of the golf course allows them to begin environmental remediation on the property prior to their taking ownership of the property. City staff asked G.L. to delay the work until after the Golf Course closes, but G.L. needs to begin the remediation now to be able to keep their schedule for improvement of the property, and the contract allows that. G.L. initially requested a large area of the 16th hole to begin remediation work, and that would have closed the 16th altogether, but City staff was able to work with G.L. to reduce the area so that the 16th hole could remain in play. The remediation involves mixing the existing soil with new soils to determine the correct mix that will improve the overall soil condition on the property in advance of development.
The remediation work and change to the 16th hole will begin on February 1 and will continue until the course closes for play in September 2021. The City's new course at the Boca Country Club will open in October 2021.
